(PR.co.nz) Tourism Waitaki is pleased to announce the Official Opening of the Aoraki/Mount Cook to Omarama sections of the awaited Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. The trail is suitable for all ability riders. Newly appointed A2O Marketing & Sales Officer Jason Menard says he is excited to see the trail being used to promote our great region to the rest of the world.
The event is a soft launch for the Mt Cook to Omarama sections of the trail, the fully completed trail of over 300kms is expected to be completed later this year.
Mike Neilson, Chair of Alps to Ocean joint committee says “The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail (A2O) is a top priority for Mackenzie & Waitaki tourism and will drive economic development to our regions.”
In the first full year of operation ending June 2014 it is projected that there will be 7,000 cyclists to have used the trail and after 5 years this will increase to 20,000 in line with cycle visitors that the Central Otago Rail Trail currently enjoys.”
The public are invited to participate in this event on February Saturday 16th starting at Mount Cook Village 9.00am for ribbon cutting and kick- off. The following day on February Sunday 17th there will be 10.00am start at Ohau Lodge, finishing at the Countrytime Hotel, Omarama at 3:00pm. Certificates will be handed out at the Countrytime, and there will be a BBQ/sausage sizzle.
