Advance Build says factory-built education spaces can help ECE centres and independent schools increase capacity while reducing disruption to children, staff and learning. ECE centres and schools across New Zealand are facing a familiar problem: they need more space but adding it while children are on site can be difficult to manage.
Advance Build says factory-built construction offers a practical way for ECE operators, charter and independent schools to add classrooms, learning support rooms, admin areas or staff facilities without months of disruption during term time.
As rolls continue to grow, it is an option that more and more education providers are turning to for new classrooms and learning spaces, including Auckland school Northcross Intermediate.
Joseph Simpkin, Director at Advance Build, says education-sector projects require careful planning because the site needs to keep operating safely while capacity is added.
“Building on an operating education site is not like building on an empty section,” says Simpkin. “You have children, staff, parents, routines, parking, access and safety to think about every day. If the construction method creates months of noise, fencing and contractor movement, that puts pressure on everyone.”
ECE centres also need to consider licensing and space requirements under the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008 and related licensing criteria. If construction affects usable indoor or outdoor space, access routes, sleep areas, toileting or supervision, it can create operational issues for the centre while the work is underway.
Advance Build says the advantage of factory-built construction is that the main building work happens offsite in a controlled factory environment. The finished building is then delivered to site, placed on its foundations and connected to services during a planned installation window.
“The building arrives ready to connect, and the goal is for as much activity to happen off site to minimise the disruption to the school activities.” says Simpkin. “For larger projects, the summer break is often the best window. Smaller spaces may suit a shorter term break, depending on the site, services and consent requirements.”
The company says factory-built spaces can be used for additional classrooms, ECE rooms, sleep rooms, learning support spaces, staff areas, admin offices, toilets, storage and community facilities.
Simpkin says timing certainty is just as important as the building itself.
“Education operators need to plan around terms, enrolments, staffing, parent communication and sometimes board or trust approvals. A fixed-price contract and guaranteed completion date, subject to agreed conditions, give them a much clearer basis for making decisions.”
