Smartphone app developers Kwalee ( www.kwalee.com ), based in Leamington Spa, England, have decided to release their debut iPhone app, Gobang Social, only in the New Zealand Apple App Store. ( http://kwalee.com/gobangapp )
David Darling, CEO, explains the benefits of launching in New Zealand. “Since everyone in the Kwalee office had loaded Gobang Social on his or her iPhone, the game has been played continuously and examined until improved to its current gaming state.”
However, the game needs a bigger audience. Darling explains: “Choosing an English speaking market allows us to gain feedback to know how to improve the game. New Zealand fit the bill perfectly!”
The game contains a direct link to a forum page ( http://www.gobang.geek.nz/forum ) where anyone can comment and discuss ways for the Kwalee development team to improve its features.
Gobang is the English translation of Chinese strategy game Gomuku. Kwalee’s twist on the simple and addictive multiplayer game allows you to challenge your Facebook friends to a battle of lining five bombs in a row, within a 12×12 board.
The skill behind the game is similar to that of noughts and crosses, also known as Tic-Tac-Toe, with its strategically satisfying concept. A considerable enhancement of the simple 3 in row game, Gobang involves two players connecting five bombs vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Consequently players can learn and use complex strategies.
Kwalee have created their entertaining game that they aim to continually improve by receiving feedback from the New Zealand audience. Darling hopes for the feedback to be as positive as Codemasters’, his previous games company, #1 best selling PlayStation game, Jonah Lomu Rugby.
