Eleazar travelled to Adelaide in April 2010 to research & examine the original illustrations by George French Angus held at the archives in state of the art facilities & assisted the SAM to archive & update information. She arranged to have a series of digital prints gifted to Tuwharetoa involving the time & specific illustrations of local landscapes & archival illustrations.
Taupo based arts company th’ink have recently assisted in the presentation & exhibition of these digital prints on canvas at the Niven Room Gallery at Taupo Museum. The collection presents as an archive project & has been developed to easily travel.
Skillfully presented with anecdotes & scripts from diary entries of the day, the exhibition conveys an experience of a historical study.
George French Angas (1822-1886) visited New Zealand for six months in 1844.
Fascinated by the Maori and their way of life, he travelled throughout the North Island recording people, places, and events, and his portraits of important chiefs form the heart of The New Zealanders Illustrated, originally issued in ten parts during 1846-1847, and now one of New Zealand?s most valuable rare books.
Later he published similar works from South Australia and South Africa before returning to London in 1860.
