Taupo Spa Park BMX Dirt Track

(PR.co.nz) A request for support from local BMX champion Jed Mildon, to look at building a new jump track at Spa Park, has received a very favourable response from Council.

Jed Mildon, a local BMX champion is keen to get a BMX dirt track established to promote the sport to young people in the district. Interest in racing and freestyle BMX appears high in the district and with freestyle being made an Olympic event in 2012, this will be a great opportunity to grow the sport.

John Ridd, Manager Parks and Reserves says the BMX Jump Track could be located next to the new Pump Track at Spa Park which has proved extremely popular in the short time it has been operational. It is also close to the Skate Park where many BMX riders tend to congregate.

Councillor Keith Crate says, “I fully support the development of activities that are fun, get our young people active and aiming for excellence. The addition of an international standard BMX jump track in Taupō will add another feather in the cap for Taupō cycling and could result in attracting more international events here.”

Clr Crate said he is especially pleased that Jed Mildon is involved. “This young man is a world-class rider. The fact that he is keen to get this project up and running, and share his skills and passion with other young people in our district is just fantastic. What a great role model.”

Councillors support creating the jump track in principle and have asked that a funding proposal and detailed plans, including who would run the track and how it would be maintained, be brought back to them at a future meeting.

Media Release 26 November 2010 from Taupo City Council.
