Hospitality awards finalists

(PR.co.nz) Nelson’s Grand Mercure Monaco Resort has, for the second time this year, been named as a finalist in prestigious industry awards.

In July the resort was named as a finalist in four categories of the international H M Awards 2010 for hotel management excellence, including a Major Award nomination for Clare Davies in the New Zealand General Manager category. Those awards will be announced at a gala dinner in Sydney on September 3, 2010.

This week the Monaco Resort was selected as a finalist in the Hospitality Association of New Zealand (HANZ) Awards for Excellence in the Best Accommodation Hotel category. The Hospitality Association Awards for Excellence are judged on a range of business-focussed criteria – such as marketing strategies, human resourcing practices, profitability, operational policies, and customer service.

Nelson’s Mint Dining Room has been selected as a finalist for Best Beef Dish and Best Lamb Dish and The Honest Lawyer has been selected as finalist in the Best Lamb Dish category.

Hospitality Association of New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson said: “The business nature of these awards sets them apart from other more consumer-driven awards. In many categories, entrants must submit business plans and financial analysis of their operations, each of which is independently verified.

“These finalists epitomise the crème-de-la-crème of New Zealand’s hospitality industry across all its guises – and were selected after a comprehensive and thorough judging process in which every venue was visited personally by members of the judging panel.

“The standard and quality among these finalists sets them apart from their competitors in the marketplace. They are a proud reflection of where the cutting edge of New Zealand’s hospitality industry is moving – delivering consumers service standards which are the equal of anywhere in the world.

“It is particularly encouraging to see a substantial number of finalists coming from smaller regional centres around New Zealand, such as Nelson – showing that great hospitality is not just confined to the major cities, but is thriving in the provinces too.”

Mrs Davies said it was extremely encouraging for both herself and the team at Monaco to again be recognised by their industry peers.

“The HM nominations were a real thrill and this HANZ nomination really reaffirms what I already believed – that I have a great team at Monaco and we’re delivering the sort of quality experience I want the resort to be known for. There are some really top quality hotels in New Zealand, so being singled out for a second time this year is absolutely fantastic. I guess it’s easy to feel people aren’t noticing what happens in provincial towns, but my team has stood up and been noticed and I’m really proud of that.”

Winners of the HANZ Awards will be announced at a gala dinner taking place in conjunction with the Hospitality Association’s annual conference in Auckland on September 30.
