(PR.co.nz) Mangere’s new arts centre is alive with performing arts this week, with workshops and performances throughout the week as part of Showtime Mangere.
The centre’s performing arts manager, Katrina Chandra, says that the programme is a great initiative for developing and supporting local performers. “Mangere is rich with talent in the performing arts: music, singing, dance and acting. This is an opportunity for the community to maximize their performance potential through development workshops and the opportunity to be on stage in our professional theatre.”
Friday evening’s Jazz Gala, organised by musician and Mangere College teacher Opeloge Ah Sam is a particular highlight, with professional musicians sharing the stage with top musical talent from the college.
Student performers include Valerie Fa’asavalu (Winner of Best Young Vocalist at the 2010 Queenstown Jazz Festival), Fa’apaia Niko (Runner-Up Instrumental Soloist at Queenstown Jazz Festival) and the Jazz Seekers (Runner-Up Band Competition at the 2010 Queenstown Jazz festival).
The evening also features MVE choir, recently returned from a tour of Melbourne, up and coming young vocalist Suzanne Butler, former Mangere College student and drummer Frank Elia, Mr Tim Bern and one of New Zealand’s leading jazz performers, Caitlin Smith as guest artist.
Showtime Mangere is presented by Rotary Club of Mangere in association with Mangere Arts Centre – Nga Tohu o Uenuku.
