(PR.co.nz) Christchurch City Council has joined the elite of the international business world after winning a prestigious Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame award.
This award is recognised as the benchmark for managing organisational strategy and performance.
The award was announced last night at the Hall of Fame award presentation ceremony in Manila.
Christchurch is only the second city in the southern hemisphere to be successful in the history of the award and the only government agency in New Zealand to have won it, Council Chief Executive Tony Marryatt says.
The Hall of Fame award honours organisations that have achieved excellence through the use of the Balanced Scorecard, a world recognised management approach. This system was developed two decades ago at the Harvard Business School. Christchurch City Council adopted the approach in 2007 and since then has completely overhauled its planning and management practices.
The results have been exceptional, Tony Marryatt says. The council is now delivering 91 per cent of its service targets, up from 65 per cent a few years ago, and staff engagement has increased from 35 per cent to 54 per cent. Line of sight from the organisation’s strategy to its operations is now clear. Christchurch is only one of only two New Zealand local authorities to have earned and retained a Standard and Poors credit rating of AA+.
“The award is a world class achievement for the organisation and it’s also great recognition for Christchurch,” Mr Marryatt says.
The award application process is highly competitive and involves a detailed audit of the organisation’s management practices and business results over time, as well as testimonials from independent experts. Seven organisations, including Christchurch City Council were inducted into the Hall of Fame last night.
Previous winners include Canon, Dupont, Hilton, the Norwegian Air Force, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Duke Children’s Hospital and the UK Ministry of Defence.
Winners are profiled in the Harvard Business Review as exemplars of good management.
