As Dr Judith Currie recently noted “substantial progress has been made in recent years on the development and applications of medium-range weather forecasts and sub seasonal climate predictions”. Now available to a range of sectoral clients from primary industry (dairy, sheep and beef, viticulture, horticulture) to energy sector clients ExtendWeather provides overwhelming results for end users interested in month by month forecasts for up to nine months that are refreshed with the latest atmospheric data every ten days.
Based on an ensemble of 40 model outputs over those ten days climate risk management now enters a new dimension in New Zealand. Given the contribution of the primary sector to New Zealand’s economy these high resolution forecasts are built on the proprietary downscaling techniques of the highly qualified climate scientists at CLIMsystems, based on the state-of-art NOAA Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) . Another point of difference is the delivery to clients of colourful, easy to read high resolution maps of the seasonal forecast for a range of variables depending on the subscription level. The basic subscription includes maps updated every ten days for anomalies of rainfall and precipitation and with written commentary of the forecast on a region by region basis. Other subscription levels include delivery of potential evapotranspiration deficit maps and for some users anomalies for wind and probability maps could be integral to their commercial enterprise. The ExtendWeather team also generated extreme weather forecasts on a monthly basis for temperature and precipitation.
ExtendWeather has partnered with Farmlands so its subscribers and shareholders can avail of discounts across the entire subscription range and have billing all managed through their Farmlands card. Farmlands see the tie up with ExtendWeather very positively with their clients “benefiting greatly” from the service.
ExtendWeather is based on a unique combination of initialization schemes as inputs to its climate model, including ENSO and ocean heat flux, global warming trends, Madden-Julien Oscillation, snow cover in remote regions of the world and stratosphere-troposphere interactions. The final forecast is produced after thorough analysis by seasoned professionals using techniques developed by Dr. Chonghua Yin one of the world’s leading climate statistical downscaling experts. Notably, ExtendWeather has predicted the end of droughts over the last year and also has been very accurate in forecasting temperature anomalies.
