(PR.co.nz) The new skating bowl at Thomson Park is expected to bring out a bigger crowd for Saturday’s Skate Jam.
The new 17 by 20 metre bowl almost doubles the skating area at Thomson Park and organisers are anticipating greater participation this year.
The Christchurch City Council had consulted with skaters at last year’s Skate Jam on the design of the new bowl, and the feedback was part of the brief for the design. The bowl was designed by David North, who has also designed the Reefton skate park.
Skate Jam is a free community event held annually at Thomson Park catering to skaters at beginners and intermediate levels. Staff from Cheapskates, the skate and snowboard shop, will hold demonstrations and offer advice on skating and blading during the day. An electric skateboard will also be available to have-a-go on.
Cheapskates also held demonstrations at local schools on Tuesday.
Prizes are being offered for the competition at the end of the Jam, as well as spot prizes throughout the day. Participants can register for the competition at the venue on the day.
The Youth Alive Trust will be hiring out rollerblades for free for those who want to have a go but don’t have any wheels. The 91ZM Black Thunders will be onsite providing hungry participants with a free sausage sizzle.
The local community are encouraged to come along and watch the action and enjoy the sweet sounds provided by DJ Insomniac.
