New Year’s Eve celebration in Cathedral Square Update

(PR.co.nz) The traditional New Year’s Eve celebration in Cathedral Square will go ahead as planned tomorrow night.

Yesterday, structural engineers assessed the buildings around Cathedral Square to determine whether the event could go ahead in the area, following the Boxing Day aftershocks. Their report says there is no uncontained damage to buildings around the Square which could impact on public safety during the Treetech New Year’s Eve Celebration.

Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button says the Council is pleased the event will be held as planned as it is an important event for Christchurch. Around 15,000 people are expected to attend the celebration.

“Many people look forward to this event every year and it’s a tradition for many families to see in the New Year in the Square. After the Boxing Day aftershocks, there is more reason than ever for people to get together and celebrate the beginning of a New Year.”

She says there are cordons around some of the buildings around Cathedral Square so people attending the event are asked to take care in these areas.

Treetech New Year’s Eve is a family alcohol-free event. The evening will kick off at 9.30pm with entertainment by the Vague As Brothers. They will be followed by the Singapore Airlines StarFest winners from 2009, Eddie and Cullen. Local Christchurch band Studio 54 will lead the countdown to the fireworks display at midnight and play until the 12:30am close.
