Tahunanui Reserve Improvements

( Nelson City Council has appointed local contractor Oldfields to continue work on improving the road layout and pedestrian access at the Tahunanui Reserve.

This project builds on the work Council carried out last year to upgrade facilities at the Reserve.

The bulk of the work is to simplify the road layout around Natureland and improve access for pedestrians and cyclists. Residents and visitors will see several changes happening over the next few months.

A network of footpaths will run right through the reserve; connecting the new barbecue area footpath through to the skating rink car park and along the eastern side of Natureland to the Modeller’s Pond area. Shared paths have been incorporated to provide off street cycling and several new speed tables will make it easier for pedestrians to cross roads.

The road north of Natureland will be opened to two way traffic while the road between Natureland and the Modeller’s Pond will be closed to vehicle traffic but accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

The car parks on both sides of the beach café have been redesigned to enable better pedestrian access and allow space for shade tree planting. More landscape areas will be created to allow better opportunities to plant trees and to provide better separation between cars and pedestrians.

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 15 March and will be ongoing until mid June. Beach visitors should expect disruptions to vehicle access and parking during construction.
