Today marks the international day in celebration of Sauvignon Blanc, an online initiative that started in California with St Supery Winery as a global social media wine tasting.
Celebrations will kick off in New Zealand and travel around the globe, following the sun. Wine brands, regions, restaurants, bars, retailers and consumers – can all celebrate Sauvignon Blanc for the day, and share what they are up to by using #SauvBlanc on Twitter and Instagram.
International Sauvignon Blanc Day provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of New Zealand’s most popular drop, said New Zealand Winegrowers CEO Philip Gregan. ”Anyone can join the celebration by enjoying a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on Friday, May 6 and telling the world how good it is!”
To celebrate in the Nelson region, Wine Nelson is planning to surprise and delight locals and tourists alike, with random acts of kindness, by ‘picking up the bill’ for the consumers glass of local Sauvignon Blanc. More than 15 local restaurants and bars in the Nelson/Tasman region are helping to support this initiative, rewarding those who have chosen to drink local Sauvignon Blanc.
And in serendipitous timing, local producer Greenhough, have just been awarded a score of 95/100 from Bob Campbell MW for their Greenhough 2015 Hope Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, with Campbell describing it as “Superior Sauvignon”. What a great way to start the Sauvignon Blanc celebrations in Nelson!
Sauvignon Blanc accounts for around 85% of wine exported from New Zealand. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc exports are worth over $1.2 billion annually.
