(PR.co.nz) In a compelling final, Sumner artist Kim Robertson took out the 2nd annual Akaroa MasterCook competition. Kim’s winning three course meal included an Asian prawn and shitake steamed custard, marinated chicken rolls stuffed with prawns and spinach with vegetable gyoza and snow peas, followed by coconut and kaffir lime steamed puddings. Lou Bentley, owner of the Akaroa Cooking School, and resident judge, thought Kim’s menu was “totally original, well executed and extremely delicious.”
Along with fellow finalist Dave Hyatt, the local Akaroa plumber, Kim had two hours to complete a three course meal of their choice. “I was really excited about the format for the final”, Kim said. “It allowed me to express myself, be creative and show my passion through food”. “I was in total disbelief to win the whole competition”, Kim continues, “I love watching MasterChef and always wanted to do it so this allowed me to follow my dream”.
Guest judge for the final, Jax Hamilton New Zealand MasterChef runner up, was blown away with not only the quality of the food but by the atmosphere. “I couldn’t believe the dishes Kim and Dave cooked. It was by far some of the best food I’ve eaten”, stated Jax. “The crowd was unreal too, the atmosphere was amazing”.
More than 100 people cheered on the two finalists at the Akaroa Cooking School. Kim not only won the Akaroa MasterCook trophy but also the fantastic first prize of an extravagant, gourmet weekend for two in Auckland attending the Food Show as well as visiting other foodie havens around the city.
The competition has been running for the past eight weeks with 16 contestants battling it out for the title.
