Experience Culture Galore 2010 in Christchurch

(PR.co.nz) Culture Galore 2010 on 13 March will celebrate the colourful diversity of Christchurch’s community with music, dance, food and arts and crafts from more than 50 cultures.

The multi-cultural festival, which has been running for the past 10 years, will be held at Ray Blank Park on Maidstone Rd from midday to 4pm.

Christchurch has a rich blend of traditions and immigrant cultures and Culture Galore is one of Canterbury’s must-visit events for those who want to actively experience our diversity, says John Filsell, Manager Recreation & Sports with the Christchurch City Council. “It is a great opportunity for local people to sample an array of cultures, some fabulous food and great performances.”

Stage performances range from modern and traditional hula dances, to belly dancing to Cantabrian styles of music. Members of the Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Indian, Fijian, Peruvian, Balkan and Indonesian communities will offer their traditional music and dance.

The cultural offering will be complemented by face painting, bouncy castle, stone and soap carving, henna tattoo, climbing tower, flax weaving, origami and baseball.

Another highlight will be the community-run workshops to teach participants new skills, a new dance, a new song or a new art from establishments such as the Rewi Alley Education and Cultural Centre.

Culture Galore is part of the Garden City SummerTimes programme and is brought to you by the Christchurch City Council and its Fendalton-Waimairi and Riccarton-Wigram community boards.
