Transformation for Trinity Garden

Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral Labyrinth garden has received a swift transformation with the installation of a 38 metre instant hedge.

The Living Walls™ instant hedge from Twining Valley Nurseries now surrounds Trinity’s unique columbarium, safeguarding the grass feature from pedestrian traffic on Parnell Rd. The hedge forms a natural boundary to the garden, guiding the public to its entranceway.

A solution was sort to deter casual access and protect this special garden. For years the lawn in front of St Mary’s, where the Labyrinth columbarium is now situated, has been used as a short cut for pedestrians and scooter riders. The garden border needed to complement the architecture and surrounding garden, and most importantly ‘not disturb the concentration of the folk walking the Labyrinth’.

The Podocarpus totara ‘Matapouri Blue’ instant hedge from Twining Valley Nurseries proved the obvious choice. This robust, native hedge with its prickly, glaucous blue foliage is both beautiful and practical. With its yew-like form, it is in harmony with the traditional church building, but with a Kiwi flavour.

From whoa to go, the transformation was completed in a day.

Twining Valley Nurseries has 12 km of instant hedges in production at their Mangatawhiri nursery.
